Chapter 8 Being Alice

When I get home from school, I’m still feeling lower than a doodle bug. I don’t want to eat the peanut butter and apple snack Momma makes for me. I don’t want to play with Ugly Brother. I don’t want to do anything.

But I know I have to put a smile on my face and try. I can’t just up and quit, so I have to learn Alice’s lines.

Ugly Brother walks over and sits down next to the kitchen table. He rests his head on my feet because he can tell I’m sad.

“You did a good job of helping me with being the Queen,” I tell Ugly Brother. He looks up at me with his big brown eyes. I reach down and pat him. “But we have to start over after all our hard work,” I say. “I’m going to be Alice. Will you please help me again?”

He replies, “Ruff, ruff!”

I pull the yellow wig from my backpack and put it on. Ugly Brother goes crazy barking. Then he runs out of the kitchen and into the living room. He hides behind the couch.

“Silly!” I shout, getting up to follow him. “It’s me, Kylie Jean! Your sister!” I peek over the back of the couch.

“Ruff!” Ugly Brother barks.
